Readout of the President’s Meeting with Prime Minister Hariri of Lebanon


President Obama met today with Prime Minister Saad Hariri of Lebanon.  The President commended the Prime Minister for his steadfast leadership and efforts to reach peace, stability, and consensus in Lebanon under difficult circumstances.  The efforts by the Hizballah-led coalition to collapse the Lebanese government only demonstrate their own fear and determination to block the government’s ability to conduct its business and advance the aspirations of all of the Lebanese people.

The President spoke to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia to wish him well as he continues to recover from his recent surgery, and thanked him for receiving Secretary Clinton in New York last week.  The President told the King that, in light of their shared commitment to Lebanon’s welfare and to supporting Prime Minister Hariri, he looks forward to continuing to work together with Saudi Arabia and other partners to support Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, and stability.

LEBANON’S STAKE IN US-IRANIAN POLICY


The Lebanese have a huge stake in the future course of US policy toward Iran and its nuclear enrichment program.  It is NALA’s perception that Hezbollah, as a military entity is funded, armed and trained by Iran as a preemptive deterrent force strategically deployed on Israel’s northern border, in defense of Iran’s ability to proceed with its enrichment program.
